Ins and outs of rain gardens set for Way Library forum

BLADE STAFF

Way Public Library invites the public to discover rain gardens and their role in storm water management.

Vicki Gallagher, 577 Foundation horticulturalist, and Judy Hagen, City of Perrysburg storm water management educator, will be the presenters at the free event, which starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

A rain garden is a planted depression that collects rainwater runoff from roofs, parking lots, and other surfaces. While it can blend into landscaping or serve as a garden, it’s main function is to retain collected storm water.

Rain gardens absorb more rain water than a traditional lawn, while removing pollutants from storm water, and recharging groundwater. They also provide habitat for wildlife.

Workshop attendees will learn how rain gardens, rain barrels, and rain chains can enhance landscaping. Site selection, plant selection, and installation and maintenance considerations will be discussed.
