Owens CC women win in OT to reach national semifinals

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Owens Community College held on to defeat Monroe (N.J.) College 113-102 in overtime Wednesday night in the NJCAA Division II women’s basketball national quarterfinals.
The Express (33-1), the No. 2 seed, advances to the Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinal game against No. 3 Johnson (Kan.) County (32-2).
It will be the first appearance in the final four for Owens, which led 84-63 with 6:42 left in the game before Monroe rallied to tie it at 94 in the final seconds of regulation.
Ashley Tunstall led the Express with 33 points and 11 rebounds. Demy Whitaker scored 15 points, while Sierra Harley added 14. Courizma Williams and LaKayra Carlisle (10 rebounds) each had 12. Briana Williams finished with 11.
Shania Johnson paced Monroe with 28 points.
It was the most combined points for a game in the NJCAA Division II national tourney, while Owens tied the record for most points.
